Clinical Child & Pediatric Psychology Postdoctoral Positions Adopting the

2022-2023 APPIC Postdoctoral Selection Standards and Common Hold Date (CHD)

 

The following list of programs includes all Universal Psychology Postdoctoral Directory (UPPD) program listings that self-identified as at least one of the following: a) Specialty Recognized by COS = Clinical Child Psychology or b) Emphasis or focus area = Child/adolescent or c) Agency type = either Children’s hospital or School-based AND selected Yes for Following APPIC PD Selection Standards.  Research-focused programs and neuropsychology programs that denoted themselves as exempt from the Standards are not included on the list. The CCaPPTC Board understands that the above extraction method may be imperfect; any other postdoctoral programs providing training in clinical child and/or pediatric psychology and following the Standards who would like to be included in the list, or for any corrections to the list, please contact Mariella Self, Ph.D., ABPP at mmself@texaschildrens.org.  Please note that all UPPD listings are self-reported by programs; CCaPPTC cannot attest to their accuracy.

 

The CCaPPTC Board intends to update this list at least weekly for the next 1-2 months, until it appears that the majority of program listings have been updated for this selection cycle.  If you are the Training Director of a program that does not yet appear on this list and would like to, you may either simply update your UPPD listing to reflect that you are following the APPIC Postdoctoral Selection Standards and await the updated list; if you wish, you may also email Mariella Self, Ph.D., ABPP at mmself@texaschildrens.org to make known that your listing has been updated and you would like to be added.

CCaPPTC Statement on the APPIC Postdoctoral Selection Standards and Common Hold Date

The Clinical Child & Pediatric Psychology Training Council (CCaPPTC) Board of Directors has received consistent feedback that the postdoctoral selection process has been difficult for both applicants and programs over the past several years.  Relative to many other specialties/settings, clinical child and pediatric psychology postdoctoral programs have been less participatory in national efforts to promote a common postdoctoral selection process (e.g., the Uniform Notification Date, or UND).  In the context of that reduced participation/collaboration, programs and applicants alike have expressed considerable dissatisfaction with their postdoctoral selection experiences and ardent wishes for an improved system. 

 

The CCaPPTC Board has recently invested considerable effort to better understand postdoctoral selection challenges, facilitate meaningful dialogue about the difficulties, and contribute to initiatives aimed at improving the postdoctoral selection experience.  CCaPPTC efforts have included examining APPIC data from recent postdoctoral selection seasons, acknowledging the current surplus of postdoctoral positions relative to available applicants, collecting and disseminating our own survey data from program directors and recent postdoctoral applicants, hosting multiple conversation hours, and active involvement with the APPIC Postdoctoral Committee while alternative postdoctoral selection processes to the UND were considered.

In July 2022, APPIC announced adoption of the new APPIC Postdoctoral Selection Standards and Common Hold Date (CHD) for the 2022-2023 postdoctoral selection cycle. The CCaPPTC Board of Directors strongly recommends that all clinically-focused postdoctoral programs in clinical child/pediatric psychology adopt the APPIC Postdoctoral Selection Standards and Common Hold Date.

 

In addition, the CCaPPTC Board holds that:

• Postdoctoral selection in our specialty has been particularly problematic, to the detriment of our applicants, our colleagues, impressions of our specialty, the broader postdoctoral training community, and the field.  Suboptimal and waning collaboration among programs on a common postdoctoral selection process has significantly contributed to the challenges experienced by both programs and applicants.

• Due to the current imbalance (i.e.,  a surplus of postdoctoral positions relative to applicants), unfilled positions will result regardless of the selection process utilized.  However, adoption of an alternative process to the UND, and specifically the APPIC Postdoctoral Selection Standards and Common Hold Date, has potential to significantly improve the selection experience of programs and applicants.

• The APPIC Postdoctoral Selection Standards and Common Hold Date appears a very promising approach, yet its potential success will be predicated upon sufficient adoption by postdoctoral programs.  This has historically been difficult to achieve in our specialty; commitment to a collaborative, communitarian approach is needed to improve postdoctoral selection in clinical child/pediatric psychology.

 

If you are the Training Director of a clinically-focused postdoctoral fellowship program in clinical child/pediatric psychology, the CCaPPTC Board asks that you adopt the APPIC Postdoctoral Selection Standards and Common Hold Date for the 2022-2023 selection season.  Research-focused programs are asked to adopt this process to the extent possible. The CCaPPTC Board plans to again collect and examine data concerning postdoctoral selection experiences and outcomes following the 2022-2023 selection cycle and is committed to continuing efforts to improve the postdoctoral selection process for applicants and programs.
